Investing in the Exceptional, Enabling the Extraordinary
Nurses are the backbone of our health system—and their care is far more nuanced and complex than many people realize. I know this because I have been a nurse since 1989.
We are the link to your physician, where we serve as a consultant, as well as your advocate. We are facilitators, in the ways that we help to pull and hold care teams together. And we are wells of compassion, which our patients can draw from when they are in need of small comforts or great emotional support.
Our work is integral to the provision of seamless, patient-centered care. That’s why Rochester Regional Health has made nursing one of the fundraising priorities of the Because Care Matters Campaign. The Campaign’s $300 million goal includes support for skills training and career development programs that are critical to the recruitment and retention of our nurses, which is critical to sustaining a high level of care.
These programs make it possible for young men and women to fulfill their dreams of being caregivers. Once again, I’m speaking from experience. I cannot overstate the importance of a strong mentor, financial assistance and professional opportunity to an aspiring nurse.
Nurses give so much of themselves so that others can heal and feel their best. It’s time for us, as the beneficiaries of their care, to give back.
