In 2016, Rochester Regional Health established the John D. States, MD Clinical Excellence Endowment Fund. The fund honors clinical distinction at Rochester Regional Health and has created a permanent endowment to provide support for healthcare system physicians and clinical staff who profoundly impact our community every day.
The fund was created through the generous donation by the family of John D. States, MD. Early in his career, Dr. States served as a captain in the United States Air Force. Upon returning home, his passions for medicine and automobiles became intertwined, inspiring him to become a pioneer in automotive medicine and safety. Dr. States was best known for spearheading efforts that led to New York State’s 1984 passing of the first mandatory seat belt law in the United States. His research on automobile accidents led to improvements in the design of windshields, dashboards and automobile restraint systems. Locally, Dr. States was heavily invested in physician training and education and served as a mentor to many area physicians in orthopaedics as well as many other specialties.
Included in this fund are two awards that will be given on an annual basis. The John D. States, MD and Rick Constantino, MD Clinical Innovation Award recognizes an outstanding physician or clinical staff member who exemplifies qualities for which Dr. States was recognized and lauded: a dedication to medicine, delivery of quality care, innovative research and a commitment to the community. The John D. States, MD Orthopaedic Education Fund supports training and continuing education for Rochester Regional Health’s orthopaedic physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
Congratulations to David Lee, MD (Rochester General Hospital Pulmonary Medicine) and Lisa Bower, PA-C (Unity Hospital Department of Surgery) the 2017 recipients of these awards.
