When does care begin? With its new front entrance, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital makes it clear that it begins when a patient walks through the door.

A warm, open space, the hospital’s new patient access center is designed to immediately reduce the stress associated with a visit. Comfortable seating and other home-like amenities create a welcoming environment for patients and their families. It also includes a new chapel for solace and reflection, a new family meeting room for private conversations with physicians and other clinicians and a discrete patient discharge exit.

Hospital staff and board members, as well as members of the community, gathered to celebrate completion of the year-long project on June 28.

“It’s a tremendous gift to our community,” said Dustin Riccio, MD, president of Rochester Regional Health’s Eastern Region about the patient access center. “Everything we do is in the service of the entire patient experience. I’m thrilled to have a space that is reflective of the patient-centered care we provide.”

The patient access center was made possible by generous contributions from the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital Auxiliary, Evelyn Baran, Richard Kirchhoff, Sally and James Praino, as well as Hannelora and Helmuth Reinhardt. Additionally, the new main entrance and drop-off is now known as the Marshall Pavilion, in recognition of the significant gift from Scott Marshall and his family in support of the labor and delivery unit renovation.

“Newark-Wayne Community Hospital includes the word ‘community’ for a reason,” said Scott Healy, NWCH board chair, “It’s friends and neighbors who take care of friends and neighbors. That is the philosophy of this community and that’s what it takes to get projects like this accomplished.”

NWCH Foundation board chair Susie Earl added, “This is not just a new entrance, but a door to better medical care for everyone who passes through it. We have a lot left to do here, but let’s take a moment to enjoy this success.”

This project is the first of many for Dr. Riccio and the Eastern Region leadership team. Through Because Care Matters: The Campaign for Rochester Regional Health, they will continue to transform Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic. This includes a $32 million outpatient “village” at Clifton Springs for which construction is scheduled to begin this fall.
