Wegman Is the New Name for Workforce Development

Danny Wegman speaks at the dedication of the new Wegman Center for Workforce Development

In high school, Emiley Keys was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a rare genetic condition where an extra electrical pathway between the heart’s upper and lower chambers causes a rapid heartbeat. Fortunately, it can be corrected with treatment. The care Keys received not only gave her a normal heartbeat, it also gave her the desire to become a nurse.

Several years and an associate’s degree later, Keys is currently working to become a licensed practical nurse at the Isabella Graham Hart (IGH) School of Practical Nursing.

“The support I have received from the [IGH] faculty has been absolutely amazing,” Keys said. “I would have to say that choosing IGH has been one of the best things I have done for myself.”

The nursing school is part of the Wegman Center for Workforce Development at Rochester Regional Health. Formerly the Rochester Regional Health Learning Center, the center was renamed in recognition of a $5 million commitment from the Wegman Family Charitable Foundation. A ceremony was held to formally dedicate the newly renamed center on October 17.

Danny Wegman, chairman of Wegman Food Markets, lauded the ways in which Rochester Regional provides opportunities for people like Keys. He also expressed his belief that all quality, local healthcare organizations are deserving of support, regardless of an individual’s affiliations.

“We are one community, and health is so important to all of us, and I’m just extremely proud of what you’re doing,” said Wegman.

Eric Bieber, MD, president and CEO of Rochester Regional Health, highlighted the center’s importance to addressing a shortage of nurses.

“We are in a time when the need for nurses far outweighs the supply,” Bieber said. “The Isabella Graham Hart School is critical to our nursing pipeline. And it has always been our fundamental belief to provide people with opportunities to grow at every stage of their career.”

In addition to the nursing school, the Wegman Center is home to the Nursing Institute, Nursing Research, the Quality and Safety Institute, the Simulation Lab, Certified Nurse Aide Training and Home Health Aide Training.
